Trail Blazers Acquire Dalano Banton From Celtics at Trade Deadline Buzzer
Portland is also signing Rip City Remix guard Ashton Hagans to a 10-day contract.
📍 PORTLAND, Ore. — The Trail Blazers didn’t get any traction on deals involving Jerami Grant, Malcolm Brogdon or Matisse Thybulle, but they didn’t have a completely inactive trade deadline. With seconds to go before the buzzer, Portland agreed to send a top-55 protected 2027 second-round pick to the Boston Celtics for third-year guard Dalano Banton, a league source confirmed. ESPN first reported the deal.
The 24-year-old Banton, who was a second-round pick by the Toronto Raptors in the 2021 draft, gets Portland’s roster up to the required minimum of 14 players. The move also gives the Blazers another body in the backcourt following Tuesday’s announcement that Shaedon Sharpe will undergo a core muscle surgery that is likely to keep him out for most of the rest of the season.
Banton has a $2.2 million team option for next season. If Portland picks it up, it becomes $217,533 guaranteed until the start of the 2024-25 season. If Banton is on the Blazers’ opening-night roster, $1.1 million of his salary becomes guaranteed; the rest of it will be guaranteed if he’s not waived before the league-wide guarantee date of Jan. 10.
The Blazers are also signing Rip City Remix guard Ashton Hagans to a 10-day contract. Hagans, who was selected to the G League Up Next game during All-Star Weekend later this month, is the second Remix player the Blazers have called up. They signed Taze Moore to a 10-day contract previously, that expired on Jan. 30.
Blazers general manager Joe Cronin is expected to speak to reporters on Thursday evening before the Blazers play Detroit.
