The Trail Blazers are not renewing the contracts of three of head coach Chauncey Billups' assistants, a league source confirmed. Chris Fleming, Roy Rogers and Ryan Gomes will not be back next season. The Oregonian first reported the news.
Rogers followed Billups to Portland from the L.A. Clippers' staff when Billups was hired as head coach in 2021. Gomes spent the past two seasons with the organization as a player development coach. Fleming joined the staff before last season and has been widely credited with helping Scoot Henderson develop in his second year in the NBA.
The Blazers will look to fill all three of the openings this offseason.
The changes come as part of an effort to fortify Billups' staff after he signed a long-term extension on the last day of the regular season.
This is the second consecutive offseason the Blazers have made major changes on the bench. Last spring, they didn't renew the contracts of Billups' lead assistant, Scott Brooks, and his brother, Rodney Billups, and assistant Steve Hetzel left for a job on Jordi Fernandez's staff with the Brooklyn Nets. They filled those spots with Fleming, Nate Bjorkgren and Ronnie Burrell.
As of now, Bjorkgren and Burrell are still in place, along with assistant coaches Jonah Herscu and Mark Tyndale and player development coaches Pooh Jeter and Gil Abraham.
