Trail Blazers assistant coach Jonah Herscu is moving from Chauncey Billups' staff to become the new head coach of the Rip City Remix, according to a league source.
Last year, Blazers assistant GM Sergi Oliva served as the head coach of the Blazers' G League team as they looked to revamp their player-development strategy, but the organization's plan was always for that to be a one-year experiment. Oliva has returned to his permanent role in the front office.
Herscu, who joined the Blazers from Sacramento before the 2022-23 season, has coached Portland's Summer League team in Las Vegas each of the last two years and served as a guest coach at the NBA's predraft combine last spring.
The Blazers' head video coordinator, Eli Kell-Abrams, is going with Herscu to be an assistant coach with the Remix, according to a source.
Herscu will be the Remix's third head coach in their three seasons of existence. Before Oliva coached the team last year, Jim Moran was their first head coach. Moran left after one year to take a job on the Sacramento Kings' coaching staff under Mike Brown.
The purpose of the G League, for players and coaches alike, is to be a stepping stone to an NBA job. This move will allow Herscu to get a full season of experience as a head coach as he looks to advance in his coaching career.
